Social groups
The groups provide a day out for patients in friendly, warm surroundings with a hot meal and some light activities, where patients can talk freely in a relaxing environment and to the volunteers in total confidence. It is intended to provide a break for carers and an opportunity for company for those who are otherwise isolated.
Where are the groups?
We currently run three social groups in the county, once a week in:
- Bridport (Thursday)
- Weymouth (Wednesday)
- Dorchester (Thursday)
What happens at a social group?
Everyone who visits is sure of a warm welcome and a relaxed environment. Perhaps most of all, social groups provide an occasion where patients can forget their problems for a while and enjoy the company of friends.
When the weather permits, there are outings to different venues of the group’s choice (for example, garden centres, pub lunches, etc.). Sometimes guest speakers visit the group to give short talks. There are craft activities, or games and quizzes. Everyone is welcome to join in if they want to. Here is an example of one of the group's programme of events. (PDF 70KB)
Lunch forms the focal part of the day and is provided at a subsidised price.
During the day, tea and coffee are provided and many people enjoy a game of cards or a jigsaw to share or just sit and chat.
A social group leader runs the day with help from a team of volunteers. These volunteers help with transport to the group for people who are unable to make their own travel arrangements.
A no smoking policy operates in all our social groups. We can accommodate wheelchairs, zimmer frames etc. Special diets can usually be catered for. Just let us know what you need and we will try to help.
You will have a review every three months to ensure we have up to date details and also to confirm you are getting the most out of your visit.
How do I join a group?
If you would like to visit one of our social groups, please let your specialist palliative care nurse / GP / district nurse know so they can fill out a referral from.
