Christmas Appeal 2019

Christmas is a time to be around those you love, sitting around the dinner table and reflecting on your memories over the last year.  But this Christmas, hundreds of people in your community will be alone – and many will not enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch.

For many people, they will dread this festive season.  Some of these will be Weldmar patients, who as well as being alone and lonely, will be living with a life limiting illness.  They need your help.

Dorset is a beautiful county to live and work in, but it also has it’s problems.  47% of our patients live in rural locations.  This means they can easily feel isolated with little around to support them.  For some of our patients, the only people they will see during the week is our caring team of professionals – and we can very quickly tell if someone is feeling lonely.

This can be extremely challenging both emotionally and physically, and can dramatically effect a patient’s morale and wellbeing.  82% of our care is given in the community and we are proud to deliver five Day Services locations across Dorset, but sadly this doesn’t meet everyone’s needs.  We need to do more to help reduce loneliness and isolation in our county.

Year on year, we are caring for an average of 4.5% more people.  We have an aging population and loneliness and isolation is only going to rise in the county.

We want to stop loneliness this Christmas and in the future, and there are two ways you can help.

We are planning a Christmas lunch, open to all of our patients that are being cared for in their own homes.  We will pick them up from home, welcome them with a delicious drinks reception, before sitting them down to a hearty three course Christmas lunch, bespoke to their dietary requirements.

We’ll complete the festivities with crackers and music, and of course they will be able to share stories and memories with others, just as Christmas should be.  We’ll put all the support in place to make sure they are able to look forward to and enjoy a Christmas lunch this December.

Because of the highly rural locations across the county, many of our patients find it difficult to travel long distances.  Popping down to their village shop or post office might be the only time they leave their home.  Our services are here for the people of Dorset and so we need to make sure we are there for them, right in the heart of their communities.

That’s why we want to introduce a brand new Community Outreach Vehicle to our range of services in 2020.  This will act as our mobile hub and be situated in different locations in Dorset every day, such as GP surgeries, supermarkets, or village halls.  It will visit the most rural parts of the county, as well as towns and villages.

Patients and their loved ones will be able to visit us for help, support, and advice.  It could just be for a cuppa and a chat, but it’s a step in the right direction to reduce loneliness and isolation across Dorset.  But we can only do it with your support.

To host a bespoke and tailored Christmas lunch will cost £22.80 per patient, to cover the travel, food costs, and decorations.

Our Community Outreach Vehicle will cost us in the region of £22,000.

If you are able to help fund either of these, or make a contribution towards both, please fill in the form below.

We wish you a happy and peaceful Christmas and thank you for your support throughout 2019.
