Braving the shave for Weldmar – Tracy’s Story
Tracy has already raised more than a thousand pounds
Tracy Palmer has shaved her hair off to raise money for Weldmar Hospicecare.
As a Health Care Assistant at our IPU in Dorchester, Tracy has been part of the team on the frontline throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, but her connection with the charity goes back two decades.
“Twenty years ago my father in law, Barry Jarvis was a patient on the IPU,” says Tracy, “and as a family we could never thank all the wonderful doctors and nurses for all the care they gave him, and the way they looked after our family in our time of need.
“I always wanted to come back to the hospice and do something to thank them in some way, so I’ve done lots of volunteering. When the opportunity came up to work at the hospice, I took bank shifts for a number of months, even turning down another job because my heart was at Weldmar. I now have got a permanent job as a HCA. It is a privilege and an honour to care for someone who is approaching their end of life, and to support and comfort their family as much as I can. It’s very sad a lot of the time, but also so rewarding.”
Tracy says she wanted to do something extra to raise money for Weldmar, after seeing first hand how care for patients and their loved ones continued, despite the challenges of the pandemic, and a date was set for her to brave the shave!
“I’m not going to lie, I was so nervous when the day arrived, but I knew it was the right thing to do, especially after seeing all the support and money being donated to such a great cause. I recruited my partner Steve, and our daughter Lottie to help and I am so proud to reach over £1000 and still counting, it blows me away!
“I am so grateful to everyone who has donated to Weldmar and so proud to say I work there, I love my job. We have an brilliant nursing team, and throughout the organisation every department is amazing, and should all be proud of how we’ve carried on. I love working alongside everyone as one big family.
What does Tracy think of the final result? “Wowza! I love my new look. Thank you so much for your donations and support, I couldn’t of done it without you.”
