Chideock Cider Makers

Chideock cider makers make a donation of £1,000 to Weldmar Hospicecare.

Throughout 2016 a group of cider makers from Chideock in west Dorset supported Weldmar Hospicecare – and visited Joseph Weld Hospice to present their cheque for £1,000 in March 2017.

Loraine Hopkins, one of the group, said “The cider makers collect for a different local charity each year. We hold a pumpkin competition each October at The George Inn in Chideock – where we sell the seeds from the previous year’s winning pumpkin, along with leftover pumpkins from that year. Myself and my husband Colin also sell vegetables and flowers from our garden, for 50p a bag”.

Colin said “We do not charge for our cider – we ask for a donation when anyone wants some of it. This could be for weddings, parties, or just to drink!”.

This year Val Mears added a donation of £600 to the cider makers fundraising, to bring the total up to £1,000. Val did this in memory of her husband, Tony Mears, who had been in Weldmar’s care and in the hospice in December 2015.

Diane Bentley, Weldmar’s Community Engagement Fundraiser, said “I would like to thank all of the cider makers for their hard work and kind donation to Weldmar. The money they have raised will help us to continue to provide our outstanding care across Dorset, supporting our patients and their families where and when they need us most – in their homes, in a local hospital in our hospice, or over the phone”.
