Weldmar is proud to be supported by the Dorset community throughout 2017

Hospice heroes

Everyone at Weldmar Hospicecare is very grateful to have the support of our local community – without whom we would not be able to offer our outstanding services across the county.

Here are just a few of the people who have supported us earlier this year.

Lowriders

Lowriders Scooter Club

On 29 October 2017, we were proud to be visited by the Weymouth based Lowriders Scooter Club who came to see one of their club at our inpatient unit, Wendy Baker.

Wendy was being cared for by our staff at Joseph Weld Hospice – and she was delighted to present a cheque to some of the nurses for £400 during the visit. This money was raised from donations by fellow Scooterists, who attended the Lowriders 25th anniversary party back in September 2017.

Kayleigh Thorp

Kayleigh Thorp

“Hair is such an important part in my life and I couldn’t imagine living life without, styling it everyday and using it to make me feel more confident and better about myself. Because I feel so strongly about my appearance and how I use my hair in different ways, it made me think about those who after chemotherapy haven’t got any hair”

On 4th September 2017, Kayleigh Thorp, who works at the Robin James Aveda Salon, Spa & Shop in Dorchester, shaved her hair to a Grade 0 in aid of Weldmar Hospicecare.

We visited Kayleigh at the Salon in October, to be presented with a cheque for £947!

Thank you Kayleigh, you’re amazing. Learn more about her at https://www.justgiving.com/Kayleighsheadshave

Da Boys are Back in Town

Dorset Midsummer Music Festival

Dorset Midsummer Festival

The Dorset Midsummer Music Festival took place at Bulbarrow Hill in June 2017, and was more successful than expected. This meant that the organisers were able to present a cheque for £500 to Diane Bentley of Weldmar Hospicecare recently.

We’re looking forward to working with the organising committee on next year’s festival.

Cerne Abbas Short Mat Bowls Club

Cerne Abbas Short Mat Bowls Club 2017

Members of the Cerne Abbas Short Mat Bowls Club continued their support of Weldmar Hospicecare by presenting a cheque for £900, following their successful “Six of the Best” charity weekend.

Wax & Relax

Wax & Relax 2017

On 16th September 2017, Wax & Relax Hair Salon on Portland held a charity day in aid of Weldmar Hospicecare – which raised an amazing £2,415! Thank you to all involved.

Jamie Dear

Jamie Dear

On Saturday 4th November 2017 Jamie Dear of Weymouth ran from Trimar Hospice in Weymouth to Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester – a distance of over 7 miles.

Jamie, a Trainee Architectural Technologist at C G Fry and Son Ltd, said “My Grandma (Jane Harvey) was terminally ill with ovarian cancer and unfortunately passed in September 2015. Weldmar Hospicecare looked after her exceptionally well in her last week so it was amazing to give something back to Weldmar for all the care they gave her. I know it costs a huge amount for Weldmar to provide the service they do so every donation helps. I completed the 7 mile run in 52 minutes and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, so thank you again.”

Emma & Isabella

Emma & Isabella

Emma Betts and Isabella White from Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester chose to fundraise for the volunteering section of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Emma said “We decided to raise money by holding cake sales over school breaks and lunch times. We did this for three months and raised over £320 in total. We decided to divide this between two charities – Save the Children and Weldmar Hospicecare. We each picked a charity and I chose to give half to Weldmar as one of my mum’s friends, Emma McConnell, spent her final days there, as did our neighbour Margery.”

Emma and Isabella presented their cheque for £163.70 to Diane Bentley, Weldmar’s Community Engagement Fundraiser at the beginning of November.

Thank you to everyone that supports Weldmar Hospicecare – without you, we would not be able to care for our patients and their loved ones across Dorset.
