Memory Jars – a letter to you from Senior Staff Nurse Caroline Joyce

Dear Weldmar Supporter

The days are getting longer, the evenings are starting to feel warmer and it’s that time of the year when flowers are starting to bloom in the garden. With restrictions starting to ease life can all of a sudden start feeling rather busy once again. But if the last 14 months have taught us anything, it is the importance of looking after ourselves, our health and wellbeing, and taking time to pause, reflect and remember.

We all experience loss at some point in our lives. It is never an easy time, nor are the feelings the same for each of us, but we are not alone. Whether we have friends, family members or neighbours close by, you are always a key and important part of the Weldmar family.

We often find a small amount of comfort when we come together for our various remembrance services, such as Light up a Life at Christmas, joining others who have been or are experiencing the feeling and emotions of loss. But just like you, they are not alone. We all have each other.

You have very kindly supported our former Sunflower appeal and service in the past and we hope that you will join us for a new installation this year. The pandemic has meant that many of us have not been able to be physically surrounded by our support networks, whether that is family members or others who are experiencing a bereavement. That is why we are inviting you to be part of our very first and extremely special Memory Jar installation.

We all have very fond memories of our loved ones – for some it might be the sound of laughter, a particular phrase or saying, or for others a special place, photograph or event. Our installation allows you to capture that unique memory, where it stays safe inside one of our solar powered Memory Jars which will shine bright throughout the night at one of our three locations across Dorset. Each location has been chosen for its tranquil and peaceful setting, whether you hear the waves crashing against the shore, birds in the sky or wind gently blowing through the trees.

As night falls, your memory will shine bright until the following day when the sun rises again. During our installations, you are able to visit your Memory Jar which will be displayed outdoors in a safe and open environment. Plus, each donation that we receive towards the Memory Jar installation will help fund the continuation of bereavement support for those who need us right now.

Across the county we are caring for more patients and their loved ones than ever before, as demand for our services continues to increase and people are reaching out to our doctors, nurses and support teams. Placing your special memory into one of these jars will not only provide an opportunity for your memory to shine bright but also fund that much needed comfort, love and support that Weldmar offers to so many people.

As well as providing you with an opportunity to visit the installation in your own time, we will also be streaming a virtual service with an opportunity to pause, reflect and remember together, with other members of our community who have loved and lost those close to them.

This unique and very special installation will capture and light up our own very special memories but there are only limited opportunities to secure a Memory Jar. To ensure that you are part of our first ever installation of this kind, please complete online form on the Memory Jar page along with your written memory.

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, as restrictions being to ease, we know that the loss that you feel towards your loved ones remains. But because of you and your support, we can ensure that no one faces end of life care or their bereavement journey on their own. Putting it simply, we are able to continue our care, because you do.

With best wishes

Caroline Joyce
