Michael Sidey was recently awarded the ‘Julian Quick Trophy’ for raising the most sponsorship at the 2017 Men's Rugby Walk for Weldmar
In March 2017 the first ever Men’s Rugby Walk took place, with men walking from Weymouth & Portland Rugby Club to Dorchester Rugby Club, raising over £3,500 for Weldmar Hospicecare.
Many of the walkers took part to show support to the Weymouth Club after the death of former captain Julian Quick.
Michael Sidey of Winterbourne Steepleton raised the highest amount of sponsorship in 2017, and was recently awarded the ‘Julian Quick Trophy’ by Amelia Quick, Julian’s sister.
Michael said “A number of family members, including my mum, have experienced the care of Weldmar. The care given was extraordinary and I chose to take part in the 2017 men’s walk as a way of paying the charity back. And this walk seemed ideal – a chance to raise money – and a pint and a pasty. What more could you want! I am grateful to everyone that sponsored me in support of Weldmar”.
Amelia said “My brother, Julian Quick, died in Weldmar’s inpatient unit in February 2017. He was 28, and had been the Captain of Weymouth & Portland Rugby Football Club. He was passionate about rugby, beer and pasties, and so we were glad as a family to be able to support Weldmar in such a special way so soon after his passing. The whole organisation made everything so easy for us in such a difficult time”.
Weldmar’s 2018 Men’s Rugby Walk will reverse the route, starting at Dorchester Rugby Club, ending at Weymouth & Portland Rugby Club, on Saturday 17th March 2018.
Alaine Harman, Weldmar’s Community Events Fundraiser, said “Our 2018 Men’s Rugby Walk will be even bigger than last years. The walk is on Saturday 17th March 2018, timed to coincide with the 6 Nations Games – which will be shown on the big screen at Weymouth & Portland Rugby Club – and we look forward to seeing you all there. Everyone at Weldmar Hospicecare is very grateful to have the support of our local community – without whom we would not be able to offer our outstanding services to patients and their families across Dorset. We would also like to thank The Self Storage Company for once again sponsoring this event”.
To register for the 2018 Men’s Rugby Walk, call the Fundraising Office on 01305 261800 or register online – register before the end of January 2018 for the Early Bird price of £16 per person (£18 after 31st January 2018).
