What could be better on New Year’s Day than taking a dip in the sea? Well, if you also do it with hundreds of other people, while wearing fancy dress costumes, and raising money for a good cause, of course.

That’s right, on 1st January 2022, you can take part in the Lyme Lunge, organised by the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis. The event has become an annual tradition for the town and this year will be their 12th time running the lunge. Each year the Rotary Club picks two charities to support and this year we’re delighted that they’ve chosen Weldmar Hospicecare as one of them.

John Berry, an organiser of the event, says ‘We chose Weldmar as we all know what valuable work they do in our Dorset community.’

‘The Lyme Lunge is a fantastic spectacle, and so so much for everyone involved. The costumes range from full-on crazy – two years ago I went as a lobster – to those that just want to take part in their swimming costume. We’re open to all and it’s always been such a joyous event.’

Lu Worrall, Weldmar’s Community Nurse for Lyme Regis, will find this out for herself as she’ll be taking part in the event for the first time!

Hundreds of people take part every year, with thousands more watching from the shore in Lyme Regis. It’s free to enter, just turn up, and they’ll be collection buckets all down the seashore if you would like to make a donation.
