Volunteer Opportunities – Patient Care and Befriending

We have a number of key volunteer roles linked directly to patient care.  These could be in our in-patient unit on Dorchester, or as part of our community care and Day Services across Dorset.

Spiritual Care Volunteer

We are looking to expand our existing team of Spiritual Care volunteers to provide pastoral, spiritual and religious care to patients and their relatives, staff and volunteers, in accordance with their stated wishes.

This may also include ordained Spiritual Care volunteers who are able to administer last rites and communion from Anglican, Baptist and Catholic churches.

You will be an established member of a local Church or Faith Community, or belong to a recognised non-religious pastoral support network e.g. Humanists.

You may be available to support us by volunteering for an agreed number of hours per week e.g. weekly visits to patients in our Day Services/Inpatient Unit and to complete records, as directed by the Head of Operations.

As part of the Family Support Service you may also wish to participate in team meetings and contribute to specific services throughout the calendar year.

Spiritual Care Volunteer Guidelines (151KB)

Volunteer Counselling Supervisor

We are looking for a volunteer to provide counselling supervision to Weldmars’ team of volunteer counsellors.

You will have minimum level 4 diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or equivalent, minimum of 450 hours counselling experience, level 6 qualification in Counselling Supervision or undertaking an appropriate supervision qualification, and be registered with a recognised professional body such as British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

The role is flexible with no set time commitment, however 3 sessions a month of 1.5 hours each is a realistic estimate, with sessions taking place at one of Weldmars’ sites.

Volunteer Counselling Supervisor Guidelines (50KB)

Complementary Therapists

We are looking for volunteers to join our expanding complementary therapy team and offer their time and professional skills in any of the following therapies:

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience of working with people within a palliative care setting, making a significant difference to their wellbeing and enabling them to better manage their pain and symptoms.

The volunteering role involves seeing Weldmar patients, carers and the bereaved at either our Inpatient Unit, or one of our five Day Services locations in the community: Weymouth, Dorchester, Bridport, Blandford and Shaftesbury.

We are also actively looking to invest in staff wellbeing and offer therapies and group sessions to members of the Weldmar team.

Complementary Health Practitioner Guidelines

Ward Duties

We are looking for volunteers to help serve meals to inpatients at the hospice. A regular commitment is needed to fulfill a rota. We have a specific need for:
-Breakfast 8.15am to 11.15am Thursday, Friday, Sunday
-Lunch 11.15am to 2.15pm Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday
-Tea 2.15pm to 4.45pm Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday
-Supper 4.45pm to 7pm Friday

We are looking for volunteers to help serve morning coffee and afternoon tea, chat to patients, and have fun with us at our Bridport Day Services.  A regular commitment is needed every Wednesday from 10am to 3pm.

Hairdresser (Dorchester)

This post requires someone to offer hairdressing to patients as part of our day services.  A regular commitment of 2 hours is needed on Tuesdays.

We require someone to offer nails and handcare to patients at our day services.  Relevant training and experience is desirable.  A regular commitment is needed however times can be flexible.

Befriending (Central & South Dorset)

(Beaminster, Bridport, Dorchester, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Portland and surrounding areas)

We are looking for volunteers to provide social support, practical help and companionship to our patients and/or carers in the community.  You could be asked to help with local transport, collect prescriptions, sit and chat or light interaction like crosswords and  jigsaws, quiet company or reading, light shopping, return library books, or dog walking.  A regular commitment is needed
