Supporting Weldmar Hospicecare’s life story work with the Arts Therapies team
The Arts Therapies team at Weldmar Hospicecare work with patients and family members to support them through a whole range of creative activities. Life story work is a very popular part of the arts service. It involves patients having the opportunity to reflect on their life’s memories and to record them in a way which celebrates and acknowledges their experiences. The book that is then produced is there for the patient and their family and friends to enjoy and treasure.
The work involves either typing from audio recording or from handwritten text. Support is given and it’s possible to carry out the transcribing at the hospice if this is more convenient.
People are able to share their achievements, their joys and sorrows and so remain connected with the perception of themselves as a person, not just a patient. It is hugely valuable to people at this unique time in their lives.
Eileen Haste, Weldmar’s Arts Practitioner said “Life story work is a wonderful part of our work. Meeting people and taking time to hear their stories is incredibly life affirming for everyone involved. At any one time we can have 8-10 life story projects on the go which keeps us busy! We couldn’t offer this opportunity for people were it not for the support of our loyal and dedicated volunteers”.
