VOLUNTEERS WEEK: Meet Geraldine Jones

“I’ve been very happy here these past eleven years. I’ve enjoyed it very much”

This week is National Volunteers Week, and Weldmar Hospicecare relies heavily on an army of volunteers doing a wide variety of roles.  Without them, we simply couldn’t provide the care and support we do in Dorset.

Every day this week we’re featuring a different area of Weldmar where we have volunteers providing a valuable service.

As a qualified hairdresser who had been working in salons & had worked in care homes nearer the end of her career, Geraldine Jones wondered what she was going to do when she retired.

“And then I had this lightbulb moment,” She said. “I’ll walk up to Trimar.”

Geraldine had no previous connection to Weldmar Hospicecare, but she knew Trimar Hospice was just up the road from where she lived. She decided to see if the Day Services would be interested in her coming in to do haircuts for patients.

Eleven years later, and not only does Geraldine still provide hair dressing services at our Weymouth Day Services, but she has also learnt Jam-Che massage (meaning gentle touch in Tibetan) and has volunteered at many of our events such as the Midnight Walk and Summer Fete!

Geraldine volunteers every Monday morning at our Day Services in Weymouth. Any patients who would like their hair washed, cut and blow-dried can do so in Geraldine’s specially set up room.

It is also here that Geraldine can provide Jam-Che for patients, which is a traditional Tibetan massage. Sessions last around 10 minutes.

“No massage is used as massage on a lot of patients would be dangerous, so this is very very gentle.”

“Most people really find it enjoyable. Some want to fall asleep while I’m doing it, some like to chat, and head and shoulders is the favourite one and the favourite for me to do as well.”

Alongside hairdressing and Jam-Che, Geraldine helps with tea & biscuits and with clearing the tables after lunch along with her ‘partner in crime’ Wendy. “I do help out when I can. Sitting and chatting to patients I find very enjoyable, I enjoy that very much. I love all the staff as well!”

Volunteers like Geraldine are a wonderful part of our Day Services team. Our aim is to offer people many stimulating activities, including creative arts, Jam Che, word games and more – and it is thanks to our volunteers that we can provide such an exciting range of activities for those visiting our Day Services!

We thank all our amazing volunteers for the work they do!  Discover more about volunteering opportunities with Weldmar Hospicecare here.
