‘Weldmar have had a real impact on our lives’ – why George will be taking to the saddle to fundraise this Christmas.
George is cycling 500km in support of Weldmar Hospicecare!
When you’re tucking into leftovers or relaxing in the days between Christmas and New Year, spare a thought for George. He’ll be cycling 500km in support of Weldmar Hospicecare.
On the evening of 27th December, George will begin his peddling challenge at London’s Herne Hill outdoor velodrome. He’ll cycle 500km (or 1,112 laps!) throughout the night and into the next day, only stopping for very brief refreshment breaks.
Rapha, a bike brand, runs an annual festive 500km event between Christmas and New Year, to encourage people to get on their bikes in a time of year that they might not normally.
Even as a former triathlete and a keen and experienced long-distance cyclist, George knows it’ll be very tough – it’s double the distance he’s ever tackled before. He hopes to complete his ride in around 16 hours.
George has been recently bereaved and when asked why he’s supporting Weldmar, he says ‘I’d signed up to do this challenge when Mum was still around. I asked which charity we should support and her answer was Weldmar.’
George adds ‘We wanted to support a local Dorset charity that’s had a real impact on us. As a family, we’ve accessed some of the services. And we know lots of other people Weldmar have supported in the area.’
George has been humbled by the amount he’s fundraised so far. He’s really pleased that his employer, Paypal, has offered to match his fundraising up to £2,500.
Everyone at Weldmar Hospicecare wishes George the very best of luck.
