As I write this, I am sat in the beautiful and tranquil gardens at our Inpatient Unit. The sun is shining and I am treated to the sound of the birds in the trees and our peaceful waterfall flowing down the garden. It is providing me with an opportunity to reflect and take some time out of our busy shifts on the wards to update you on everything that is going on at Weldmar.
Firstly, I have just sat here and read our brand new Supporters Magazine, which you can pick up from any Weldmar Hospicecare shop if you haven’t received a copy through the post. Our main feature story is about the launch of our very exciting new service, Weldmar at Home, which has been funded by our loyal and generous supporters. The service launched on 19th July and we are already seeing the invaluable difference that it is making to patients and their loved ones, enabling people to be cared for in the comfort of their own home with specialist and reliable Weldmar support. You can meet some of the new faces behind the service and why they have chosen to come and make a difference here at Weldmar throughout the magazine.
We are extremely fortunate to have such amazing grounds here at the hospice and I am currently overlooking our beautiful and spacious meadow. Usually right now me and my colleagues would be working with the fundraising team to plan and organise one of our largest and most popular fundraising events, our Summer Fete. Each September over 3,500 people join us for a fun family day out which usually raises in excess of £25,000. Some of you may remember back to 2012 when we had to postpone the Fete due to a flooded meadow and then later had to overcome an arson attack on the fete donations just a week before the event was due to take place. But once again, our community rallied round and we delivered the event that we all know and love.
Sadly though, the pandemic altered our plans last year and for the first time in 25 years we were unable to hold the event as planned. We have been ever hopeful that this year would be different and we have worked hard to look at many alternative options to deliver a safe and enjoyable event. However, we have made the difficult decision that we are simply unable to hold the Fete again this year. Although many restrictions have lifted and it is an outdoor event, we feel that with the internal restrictions that we will need to put in place, mixed with the large number of anticipated attendees, it will just not be safe for us to hold this event in the grounds of our Inpatient Unit. It is important that we put the safety and wellbeing of our staff, volunteers, supporters and our patients, who often enjoy soaking up the event atmosphere with their loved ones, first. I know, like me, many of you will be disappointed.
A highlight for me and my nursing colleagues each year is running the very popular Nurses Stall at the Fete. As well as selling homegrown produce we run a very successful raffle which raises thousands of pounds each year. Apart from not being able to run our physical stall this year, I will miss meeting all of you. It is always an honour and warming moment to be reunited with our supporters, many of which have had loved ones receive our compassionate care. For me, and I speak on behalf of all of my colleagues, we always have a special bond with every person that we care for and that extends to their friends and family members too. You will always be part of our Weldmar family and I look forward to when we can all come together again and help fund our care for the future.
