How did Weldmar Hospicecare become the 'Outstanding' service that it is today? Read our timeline from our creation to the current day

Throughout 2019, Weldmar Hospicecare is celebrating 25 years of Hospicecare throughout Dorset, marking a quarter of a century since the doors on our inpatient unit opened in January 1994.

1990

A public appeal is launched by the ‘Dorset Respite Hospice Trust’ to build a hospice in Dorchester

1st May 1992 

Sir Joseph Weld cuts the first turf to start the creation of ‘Joseph Weld House’

19th May 1992

HRH The Prince of Wales visits the site of the future ‘Joseph Weld House’, inspecting some of the early work and the drawings. He also attends the first AGM of the ‘Dorset Respite and Hospice Trust’, chaired by Major John Greener

June 1993

The first charity shop opens in Trinity Street in Dorchester

19th January 1994

The doors of our inpatient unit are opened and we welcome our first patient

April 1994 

HRH The Prince of Wales becomes the Patron of the ‘Dorset Respite and Hospice Trust’

8th March 1994

The ‘John Greener Day Care Centre’ opens at ‘Joseph Weld House’

31st May 1994

The Duchess of Norfolk formally opens our inpatient unit 

February 1995

‘The Dorset Respite and Hospice Trust’ is renamed ‘Joseph Weld Hospice Trust’ and ‘Joseph Weld House’ becomes ‘Joseph Weld Hospice’

27th February 1996

Trimar Hospice opens in Weymouth, providing day care 

9th May 1996

The Duchess of Norfolk formally opens Trimar Hospice

27th July 1996

The first Summer Fete is held at Joseph Weld Hospice and raises £7,000. Today this event attracts over 3,000 people and raises on average £26,000 each year

17th December 1996

The first ‘Light up a Life’ Christmas Tree Service is held at Joseph Weld Hospice, attended by 500 people. We now hold seven services across the county, supported by around 1,500 people

11th February 1998

The palliative care nursing service had a change of status to ‘CancerCare Dorset’ and the partnership with Macmillian was dissolved

1st October 2002

Joseph Weld Hospice and Trimar Hospice merge and become ‘Joseph Weld and Trimar Hospice’ 

22nd November 2004

Joseph Weld and Trimar Hospice and CancerCare Dorset merge and become ‘Joseph Weld and Trimar Hospice and CancerCare Dorset’

27th February 2007

The organisation is renamed as ‘Weldmar Hospicecare’

24th August 2007 

The first Midnight Walk is held in Weymouth with 500 participants. This event has raised over £750,000 for Weldmar Hospicecare since 2007 and this year features a ‘Silver Spectacular’ theme to mark our 25th Anniversary

17th – 22nd October 2013

We hold our first overseas challenge with 23 members of our community trekking across theWeldmar's Colour Run Colour Throw Sahara Desert. Since 2013 we have held an overseas challenge each year, helping to raise to date a total of over £300,000.

23rd October 2013

We hold our first Strictly Ballroom event in partnership with Eileen Spracklen School of Dance, raising £12,000. To date, this event has raised over £80,000 for Weldmar Hospicecare. Weldmar's Bubble Rush 2017

19th January 2014

We mark the 20th Anniversary of the opening of our inpatient unit

18th April 2015

We host our first ever Colour Run event in Weymouth, a brand new event to the county. Over 1,000Help us be there 24/7 participants took part in the event which is still going strong in 2019.

20th July 2016

Weldmar Hospicecare was rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission after an unannounced visit in March 2016

7th May 2017

We hold our first Bubble Rush event in Weymouth, running alongside our Colour Run and creating ‘Dorset’s Brightest Weekend’

1st August 2018

HRH The Prince of Wales formally agreed to renew his commitment to Weldmar Hospicecare by extending his Patronage

1st November 2018

Weldmar’s 24 Hour Advice Line of our patients and their relatives is launched, providing comfort and reassurance 24 hours a day

18th January 2019

We mark 25 years of Hospicecare throughout Dorset with a very special live broadcast on BBC Radio Solent, 103.8FM – presented from our inpatient unit

19th January 2019

25 years to the day when the doors of our inpatient unit opened
