Mr Stephen Baynard – FCMA CGMA
Mr Baynard joined Weldmar Hospicecare in 2010 and was appointed Chairman in November 2014.
He has had a very distinguished and successful career in Corporate Finance principally in the travel industry and has held posts including Worldwide Finance Director of ‘Thomas Cook’ and CEO of the major travel retailer ‘Going Places’ with over 750 retail stores.
He has particularly helped Weldmar in the development of the Retail and Fundraising arms which fund most of its activities.
He is a keen sportsman and has a love of Oriental antiques. He has four adult children and lives with his wife and Rhodesian Ridgeback in Burleston, five miles outside of Dorchester.
Chief Executive Officer
Ms Caroline Hamblett – LLB, FCIPD – Registered Manager
Caroline Hamblett joined Weldmar in January 2016. She has had a varied career, initially as a police officer, before moving into the commercial sector with the Hanson Trust and Nestle. Caroline had a long and successful career in Marie Curie Cancer Care in all areas, including HR, operations, retail and service delivery. She holds a law degree, a legal practice certificate and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Caroline has two teenage boys who are rugby mad and a beautiful cockapoo dog. When not standing on the sidelines of windswept rugby pitches, Caroline enjoys yoga.
Dr Karen Steadman – MB ChB, MRCGP, DCH, DRCOG
Dr Steadman qualified in medicine at Leicester University in 1989, then trained for General Practice. Having a special interest in palliative care, she decided to retrain in Southampton for four years and completed her higher specialist training in Palliative Medicine in 2000, becoming a Consultant at Weldmar.
She is particularly interested in education and training and is a clinical supervisor for junior doctors. She became Medical Director at Weldmar in 2013. Karen is also the Caldicott Guardian for the organisation.
Director of Nursing
Caroline Sweetland – RN, PGCE, NMP, MSc
Caroline qualified as a Registered Nurse at the Nightingale School of Nursing at St Thomas’ Hospital in London in 1987 and since then has spent most of her career in palliative care having a passion for making a difference to those at the end of their lives.
She held a variety of roles in Royal Trinity Hospice and St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, as a palliative care nurse specialist in Cornwall and at Musgrove Park Hospital and St Margaret’s Hospice in Somerset before coming to work at Weldmar in January 2010.
Caroline is also a trained teacher and enjoys the opportunity of developing the knowledge and skills of all those involved in care and has a strong belief in the role of the multi-disciplinary team.
She became Director of Nursing at Weldmar in January 2018 and is the Accountable Officer for the charity.
Director of Finance
Sheena Keep – ACA
Sheena Keep has been Finance Director of Weldmar Hospicecare since 2004, having previously been Finance Manager of CancerCare Dorset since April 2002.
A chartered accountant, she trained with Ernst & Young in Birmingham where she qualified in 1986. After a few years in their small business department, where she gained experience in all areas of accountancy and taxation, she became company accountant with a manufacturing company in Warwickshire for 12 years.
She relocated to Dorset in 2002 for family reasons.
Director of Fundraising & Marketing
Matt joined Weldmar Hospicecare in November 2006 after previously supporting the charity for many years in a voluntary capacity.
He has delivered several roles since working for Weldmar with events management being his specific background. Matt has an understanding of all aspects of fundraising including community, events, challenges and individual giving. With in-depth and hands-on knowledge and experience of Weldmar’s services, he is responsible for all fundraising, marketing, communication and PR functions within the organisation.
Matt lives in Dorset with his wife, is a trained chef and has been located in the county since he was born. Both Matt and his family have a personal connection to Weldmar and are committed to supporting a charity that is so close to many people’s hearts.
Director of People Services
Hilary Harrold – BA (Hons), Chartered MCIPD
Hilary joined Weldmar Hospicecare in August 2016 in the newly created role of Head of Human Resources & Volunteer Services. Since December 2017 Hilary has been the Director of People Services, leading on Human Resources, Volunteer Services and Workforce Development.
After graduation from the University of Exeter, Hilary started on a two year management training scheme with Marks and Spencer. On completion she moved into Human Resources in local government at Dorset County Council and then Borough of Poole Unitary Authority where she was the Recruitment Manager. Hilary completed her professional qualification whilst at Dorset County Council and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. An opportunity to further develop her career came with a move to the Fire Service where she spent 15 years as Equality & Diversity Adviser and latterly HR Manager before leaving to take up the new role at Weldmar Hospicecare.
In her spare time Hilary is Chair of Governors for a local First School and has been part of the Governing Body for 6 years.
Director of Retail Operations
Valerie Burnham joined Weldmar in October 1993 just following the opening of the Weldmar’s first charity shop in Dorchester.
Her working career started off in the Civil Service but Valerie felt her interest leaning towards the challenges of retailing and so made a career move. She worked for 22 years with large corporate groups – including Hanson’s, UDS, Storehouse, and latterly Sears.
Her role as a Senior Sales Manager was in ladies fashion and covered almost all parts of the south of England, including the West End of London, and all major city stores. She has continued her role through the two mergers and is looking forward to taking the Weldmar’s retail opportunities to greater strengths.
